How Many Questions Are There in the G1 Test in Ontario?

If you are about to write your G1 knowledge test, you may be wondering about the format of the exam, including how many questions are on the test. Look no further!

How Many Questions Are in The G1 Test?

The G1 knowledge test includes 40 questions, divided into two sections:

  • 20 questions on road rules and regulations
  • 20 questions on road signs

To get a passing grade, you must get 80% of the questions correct. This requires 16 correct questions in each section. The test is not timed.

A realistic photo of a maroon Honda CR-V stopped at a pedestrian crosswalk on an empty urban street. The driver has their left arm extended out of the window, waving. The car displays an Ontario license plate reading "CKFG 217". The background features several modern buildings with large windows and beige facades, and a few cars driving in the opposite direction. The atmosphere is calm, with soft daylight and no visible pedestrians.

Section 1: Road Signs

This portion of the test is designed to assess your understanding of road signs, more specifically:

  • Warning signs are used to notify drivers about any foreseeable hazards or drastic changes in travel conditions: unexpected turns, animals crossing the street, sharp climbs, wet roads, crosswalks, etc.
  • Regulatory signs indicate rules that must be obeyed. Examples include speed limits, stop signs, or one-way streets.
  • Information signs offer directions, driving distances, upcoming exits, and locations of emergency facilities.
  • Prohibitory signs tell you where certain actions are prohibited. Examples include no parking signs, no U-turns, or no entry.

Section 2: Road Rules and Regulations

The second portion of the test deals with the Highway Code and assists beginners in preparing for unsupervised vehicle operation, focusing on accident prevention techniques.

  • Right-of-way rules define road users who have priority depending on a particular situation, for instance, at intersections or when the road is merging onto a highway.
  • Speed limits This section addresses the speed regulations for operating a vehicle in residential neighborhoods, school divisions, highways, etc.
  • Rules for navigating roundabouts. You’ll find out how to properly enter roundabouts, travel in a circle, and exit such places without causing accidents.
  • Traffic light signals. You’ll be able to grasp the meaning and rules of red, yellow, and green signals. You’ll also learn how to interpret specialized lights, e.g., flashing red and green.
  • Seat belt and child restraint laws. This section enables you to appropriately review the legal requirements related to using seat belts, as well as securing children in a motor vehicle.
